This is an extremely insightful discussion into the concept, values and intricacies of leadership. Well worth listening if you lead a team as a business owner, entrepreneur or manager. Our guest is Mark Terrell, Founder of the Reluctant Leader Academy.
We kick things off discussing what leadership means to Mark and this is around setting a vision, communicating this vision to your team and being consistent with everyone. As a leader its important to be clear on these things; what are we doing, how are we doing it and why it's important? Then in combination with a clear vision, it's about supporting your team to achieve goals relating to this but also finding the balance between challenging them too.
We discussed supporting teams and helping them to know when they are making a difference and contributing to the outcomes and goals of the business. Mark shared a very effective way of doing this by recognising people doing things right, having an honest conversation and simply feeding back to them on a job well done, either verbally or with a note.
Lastly, we go on to discuss the change from a push style of leadership to a pull. In the early stages in a business, leaders need to get teams progressing on their tasks, pushing them in the direction that the business is trying to go in and making sure everyone has clarity. Then it's about transitioning to a pull style, where the team take on more responsibility, you're investing in their skills development, the team are growing by being outside of their comfort zone, and in effect you are aiming to make yourself redundant. You change from the biggest cog in the machine to become the oil.
We wrap up with the importance of being explicit, having solid self-awareness as a leader and helping your team to grow by placing trust and confidence in them.
An essential insight into leadership, thank you to Mark for taking the time, enjoy everyone.

Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Our review of the episode with Tony.
Original podcast description:
Welcome to another episode & today we are joined with Tony Barritt, MD of Investor in Customers.
To kick things off Tony shares his analogy that management is about 'getting things done' and leadership is more to do with 'making things happen', with favourable qualities a leader should exhibit is about being fair, the ability to make tough decisions & have a balanced judgment.
Tony shares his past experience about being the captain of his cricket team in his post-university days where it was important to find the balance between fun & winning - a helpful concept when working with teams in the workplace no doubt. We discuss the importance of being able to 'step up to the plate' and breaking large problems down and think strategically about how to solve these issues, not being too proud to ask for help, and thinking about who is needed.
To wrap things Tony shares his thoughts and the importance of relating business decisions back to the customer - with Jeff Bezos' Empty Chair Experiment - if a customer was sat in the boardroom, would they be happy and benefit from these decisions?
An insightful take on leadership from Tony whose business, at heart, is about helping their customers.

Episode 32 | Review: Selina Bolton - Being the Architect of Change
Thursday Dec 10, 2020
Thursday Dec 10, 2020
Our review of our recent podcast with Selina Bolton, Director & Founder of Seed Partners.
Original podcast description:
On today's episode we are joined with Selina Bolton, Founder and Investor in Seed Partners who shares her very astute views on leadership.
Selina starts things off by sharing her views on leadership, with an effective leader being someone who enrols and inspires change and drives innovation, moving onto an important trait being the ability to understand the challenges around you. This is all about engaging with and empowering everyone, listening to all members in your team using effective communication to work together.
We move onto to an area we both really liked Selina's views on and this was how someone can demonstrate leadership qualities at any stage of their career, it's all about taking initiative, coming up with a proposal for change on your own terms, not having to wait for a budget, using this to get buy in and sell the vision to take a 'leap' - which all ties in to going above and beyond in your role.
We go into more detail on this and how this can be done within an organisation; being active in your role, identifying the change makers, creating a feedback loop and empowering others.
It's all about how you can contribute to the future of your company or your own business.
To summarise, in Selina's own words, being a leader is akin to be the 'Architect of Change'
A big thank you to Selina!

Episode 30 | Review: Rebecca Galley, Hydroscand
Friday Dec 04, 2020
Friday Dec 04, 2020
Listen to our views, takeaways and thoughts on the podcast interview with Rebecca Galley.
Below is the original description.
Today we are joined with Rebecca Galley, the Managing Director at Hydroscand UK. Rebecca has held numerous leadership roles from Commercial Manager to Operations Director to now MD.
To kick-off, Rebecca shares her views on the differences between management and leadership, in that managers tend to be task-oriented whilst leaders focus more on traits, getting results through their team and providing support. This leads on to be one of Rebecca's tips for being an effective leader; being part of the team and getting the best from everyone, as well as being a good communicator. Rebecca talks about critical thinking and considering all the options when having to make difficult decisions.
Rebecca shares her views on leadership by saying that leaders should get to know everyone in their team, who are they, what they're interested in and what issues they might have? Also the importance of having conversations where you get to really know your team.
Responsibility and the ability to make tough decisions was another of Rebecca's points and that sometimes a leader will have to make a decision that won't be favourable with everyone. This requires emotional intelligence which helps you to become a more empathetic leader when you might have to do the uncomfortable thing.
And lastly, something that has come up a few times, LEADERS DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME!
Our podcast with Rebecca is full of practical advice and thoughts on leadership. It is a brilliant listen for anyone who is a leader or wants to improve their approach to leadership. A big thank you to Rebecca.
